Glazing day at the studio :)

... Read moreOh, the thrill of glazing day! It's truly one of the most exciting, and sometimes nerve-wracking, parts of the pottery process. You spend so much time forming your clay, getting that perfect shape for your pottery piece, whether it's a delicate pottery bowl or a sturdy pottery mug, and then it's time to add that magical layer that will transform it. I know I just dove right in with a new glaze without test tiles (oops!), but for those of you who might be starting out or trying a new technique, making test tiles is truly a lifesaver. It’s like a sneak peek into how your glaze application will behave on your specific clay body and at your kiln’s temperature. You get to see the color, texture, and how thick or thin to apply it, all before committing to your finished unglazed pieces. This is especially crucial when you're aiming for a particular finish or trying to replicate a beautiful star design you saw somewhere. What exactly is glazing, anyway? Beyond making your pottery look pretty, glazes serve a vital function: they make your pieces food-safe, waterproof, and durable. Imagine all that effort put into a pottery mug, only for it to leak! Glazes are essentially a glass coating that fuses to the clay surface during high-temperature firing. There's a whole world of pottery glaze types out there: glossy for a shiny finish, matte for a sophisticated look, satin for something in between, and even textured glazes that add tactile interest. The 'before glazing' stage is just as important as the application itself. After your pottery piece has been bisque-fired (turned from fragile clay into a durable, porous ceramic), it's ready for its glaze. Always make sure your bisque ware is clean and dust-free. Any dust can prevent the glaze from adhering properly, leading to frustrating imperfections after firing. When it comes to the glaze application, there are several popular methods. Dipping is quick and efficient for full coverage, while brushing allows for more intricate designs and layering. Pouring is great for interiors of bowls or mugs. The key is even coverage; too thin, and the color might be weak, too thick, and it could run or flake off. I'm always thinking about how to achieve that perfect, consistent layer every time. Then comes the most nail-biting part: the firing! This is where the real magic happens. Your dull, unglazed pottery goes into the kiln, and the intense heat transforms the raw glaze chemicals into a vibrant, glassy surface. Seeing the pottery before and after glazing is truly rewarding. What might look like a simple, muted color when wet can burst into a brilliant hue or develop fascinating textures once fired. It's always a surprise, and even after years, I still feel like a kid on Christmas morning waiting for the kiln results. Sometimes, things don't go as planned. You might get crazing (tiny cracks in the glaze), blistering, or glazes that run too much. These are all part of the learning curve in pottery. Every 'mistake' is a lesson for your next glaze application. Don't be afraid to experiment, even if it means living a little on the edge like me! Sharing your journey, the successes and the learning moments, is what makes the pottery community so special. I can't wait to show you how my latest experiment with this new glaze turns out!
