Step Out of Auto Mode (It’s Easier Than You Think)
For the longest time, Auto Mode felt safe.
But safe was also boring.
Flat. Lifeless. Predictable.
Manual Mode terrified me…
until I realized something:
You don’t have to master EVERYTHING at once.
Just control the light.
Here’s the simple way I started on my hikes this week:
• Set ISO to 100–400 and forget it.
• Pick one aperture for the whole walk (f/2.8 for dreamy backgrounds, f/5.6+ for details).
• Use shutter speed to brighten or darken.
Suddenly, the leaves were more than leaves.
I saw shadows carving depth into the forest floor.
Light dancing on wet rock.
Golden highlights I never noticed before.
Manual Mode didn’t just change my photos…
It changed how I see.
Now when the sun cuts through branches,
I don’t panic — I shape it.
If you’re scared to step out of Auto,
you’re right on the edge of something magical.
Save this for your next walk,
and try controlling just ONE setting.
Growth happens in the shadows you’re avoiding. 🍁
