Film Photography

When I first embarked on my film photography journey, I admit I was completely absorbed by the technical aspects: loading the film, setting the aperture, shutter speed, and focusing manually. It felt like a whole new world compared to digital. But after developing my first few rolls of black and white film negatives and seeing them come to life on the contact sheet, a new challenge emerged: how do I achieve balance in photography with just shades of gray? It turns out, understanding balance is even more critical in black and white analog photography because you don't have color to guide the eye. Visual balance is all about how elements within your frame interact to create a sense of equilibrium. It doesn't always mean perfect symmetry; often, an asymmetrical balance can be far more dynamic and interesting. For instance, when I was out shooting street scenes, I’d often find myself trying to place a subject, like a person in profile or even an unexpected element like a stuffed animal, in a way that felt right. I learned to look for natural anchors. A distinct horizontal line in the background, for example, can provide a stable base, allowing a smaller, more dynamic subject to hold its own without making the image feel lopsided. One key principle I've been experimenting with is the rule of thirds. Imagine dividing your frame into nine equal sections with two horizontal and two vertical lines. Placing your main subject or points of interest along these lines or at their intersections can create a natural sense of balance and draw the viewer's eye. It works wonders for beginners like me who are still training their eye. Another fascinating aspect is 'negative space.' This is the empty area around and between your subjects. In film, especially black and white, mastering negative space can dramatically enhance the impact of your main subject and contribute significantly to overall balance. It allows the eye to rest and appreciate the form and texture without distraction. I’ve found some of my most compelling film prints are those where I deliberately used empty areas to highlight a solitary figure or object. The beauty of analog photography is that every shot counts, forcing a more deliberate approach to composition. You can't just snap away and hope for the best. This slower learning process has truly helped me internalize these compositional ideas. I'm constantly thinking about light, shadow, form, and how to arrange them harmoniously within the frame – even before I press the shutter. Looking at my early contact sheets, I can see my progress, from haphazard compositions to more thoughtful, balanced shots. It's incredibly rewarding to see that growth, knowing I'm not just capturing an image, but crafting a moment with intention and visual harmony.
