The Letter That Became a Song

Some songs start with melodies. Others start with metaphors. Note to Lady Raven began as something much simpler — a letter.

At the time, I was trying to put into words something that had been left unresolved. The poem was addressed to a woman I call Lady Raven, a name I knew immediately I would use. Partly because of her fascination with ravens, but mostly because the phrase itself had a kind of music to it. I hoped that if she read the words, she might understand the depth of what I felt. In that sense, the poem worked — the feelings are undeniable on the page. What it didn’t do was change the outcome.

The poem itself is built from observation. Small details that had stayed with me: her laugh, her fascination with Norse mythology, the phases-of-the-moon tattoo she usually kept hidden, the bat pendant I once gave her. Those details served a purpose. They were my way of saying “I see you.” But they were also a way of imprinting her into the poem itself. In that sense the poem became both a piece of art and a record — a catalog of who she was to me and why she mattered.

By the end of the poem, there’s no clean resolution. The speaker never truly accepts that the story is over. Instead, he resigns himself to the idea that some things simply don’t fade the way we expect them to. When the final phrase arrived — “this tell-tale heart” — I knew immediately the poem had found its ending. Not because the pain was resolved, but because it had been named.

In the end, Note to Lady Raven became something larger than the relationship that inspired it. It became a permanent record — proof that the moment was real, and that the love behind it was real too. And if a poem can do nothing else, sometimes that’s enough.

... Read moreWhen I first read about how 'Note to Lady Raven' evolved from a simple letter into a poem, it really resonated with me. Often, we struggle to find the words to express complex emotions, and sometimes writing a letter can feel like the most straightforward way to pour out what’s left unsaid. What struck me most was how small, vivid details—like a laugh, a tattoo, or a pendant—became anchors in the poem, turning abstract feelings into tangible memories that make the story come alive. I’ve experienced similar moments where a piece of writing served as both a healing tool and a record of a relationship. For example, I once wrote a letter to someone close, trying to articulate feelings that were too tangled to say out loud. Though the letter didn’t change the outcome, it crystallized my emotions and helped me accept that some stories don’t have tidy endings. There’s a bittersweet comfort in naming the pain because it acknowledges the significance of what was lost. Additionally, the use of symbolism—like the phases of the moon tattoo or the fascination with Norse mythology—adds depth that invites readers to uncover layers beyond the surface. It’s these unique personal touches that make a poem not only an artwork but an intimate map of someone’s heart and memories. This approach has inspired me to notice the subtle details in my own relationships and to understand how important they are in shaping our emotional stories. Ultimately, writing or creating art from unresolved emotions can be a profound act of preservation. It allows moments, feelings, and people to live on beyond immediate circumstances. Even without closure, the act of putting those emotions down in words gives them a kind of immortality. For anyone considering turning their own experiences into art or memoir, this story is a beautiful reminder that sometimes simply bearing witness to our feelings through writing is enough to make peace with the past.
