Hoonah, Alaska — A story of sacred land, stolen land, and strength that endures.

Before Hoonah was a cruise stop or a wildlife destination, it was — and still is — the ancestral home of the Tlingit people, whose deep roots in this land stretch back over 10,000 years. But like many Indigenous communities across this country, the Tlingit story includes forced migration, stolen land, and an ongoing battle for sovereignty.

📜 HISTORY + DISPLACEMENT

The original homeland of the Tlingit people was Glacier Bay — a lush, thriving region until the 1700s, when a rapid glacial advance pushed them out. They resettled in Xunaa (Hoonah), naming it “protected from the north wind,” and built new homes along Icy Strait. But even here, colonization and government overreach disrupted their way of life. Much of their land was seized without consent or compensation, and they were excluded from decisions about their own ancestral territory — including the establishment of Glacier Bay National Park.

🌿 RESILIENCE + LAND BACK MOVEMENT

Despite centuries of erasure, the Tlingit people never stopped fighting for what is theirs. Today, through organizations like the Huna Totem Corporation and the Hoonah Indian Association, they are actively reclaiming stewardship of their land, revitalizing their language, preserving their oral traditions, and demanding recognition of their sovereign rights. The movement to return land and decision-making power to Indigenous hands is alive and strong here.

🦅 CULTURE + CONNECTION

Tlingit culture is deeply tied to the land and water — from their sacred totems to their clan systems, each symbol and story connects them to nature and ancestors. Every step you take here, every eagle soaring above, every carving in cedar… it all holds meaning. This isn’t just scenery — it’s living legacy.

📍Hoonah isn’t just a stop on an Alaskan itinerary.

It’s a living story of Indigenous survival, resistance, and reclamation.

Honor it. Learn from it. Speak their names.

... Read moreHoonah, Alaska, serves not only as a scenic stop along the Icy Strait but also as a vital center for understanding Indigenous rights and cultural preservation. The history of the Tlingit people's forced migration from their original homeland of Glacier Bay due to natural and colonial forces illuminates broader patterns of Indigenous displacement throughout North America. The advancing glaciers in the 1700s compelled them to relocate to Xunaa, present-day Hoonah, a place they named "protected from the north wind," symbolizing their resilience and adaptation. Despite centuries of colonization, land seizures, and exclusion from decision-making—such as during the establishment of Glacier Bay National Park—the Tlingit have continually asserted their sovereignty and connection to the land. Modern efforts by organizations like the Huna Totem Corporation and the Hoonah Indian Association demonstrate active stewardship over their territories, emphasizing language revitalization and the preservation of oral traditions, which are essential to maintaining cultural identity. The Land Back movement exemplifies Indigenous communities' ongoing fight to regain authority and restore ancestral lands. This movement is critical in promoting environmental stewardship aligned with Indigenous knowledge systems, fostering sustainable relationships with natural resources distinct from Western approaches. Tlingit culture is intimately linked with the natural environment—their sacred totems, clan systems, and artistic expressions like cedar carvings all embody their deep spiritual and historical connections to land and water. The eagle, a prominent figure in their symbolism, represents strength and vigilance, mirroring the community's perseverance. Recognizing and honoring the Tlingit story enriches not only understanding of Alaskan history but also broader dialogues on Indigenous rights, reconciliation, and cultural survival. Visitors to Hoonah are encouraged to engage respectfully with this living legacy—learning from the past and supporting initiatives that champion Indigenous voices and sovereignty. Incorporating hashtags such as #HoonahAlaska, #TlingitStrong, #LandBack, #IndigenousRights, and #AlaskaNativeVoices connects this narrative to wider social movements advocating for Indigenous empowerment and environmental justice, encouraging awareness and solidarity beyond regional borders.
