This concept, sometimes called the sensory filter theory, proposes that the brain screens the infinite field of consciousness, preventing us from sensory overload. In practical terms, this means our conscious experience is just a small window through which we perceive reality. Much like a radio tuning into a specific frequency, our brain selects which signals to process while ignoring the rest. This helps make sense of how the left brain focuses on logic and goals, while the right brain emphasizes spatial awareness, yet both work together to create our subjective experience. I've experimented with meditation and mindfulness practices to see if I could thin this 'veil' and expand awareness beyond typical limits. Moments of deep meditation sometimes felt like piercing through the normal cognitive boundaries, hinting at a larger sense of self or consciousness. Many spiritual traditions align with this, seeing the brain as a filter attached to the physical body and multiple layers of human existence, including spiritual or divine aspects. The concept that the brain serves as a partial barrier is supported by the idea of humans comprising seven layers, ranging from physical to spirit man, shaped by ancient philosophies and modern neuroscience hypotheses. This challenges the purely materialistic view of consciousness as solely a brain product. Engaging with neuroscience research and spiritual awakening communities, such as those discussing #BrainScience and #Consciousness, reveals an ongoing dialogue blending science and spirituality. This intersection suggests consciousness could be much broader and deeper than we conventionally assume, with the brain playing a mediating role rather than the sole creator. For those curious about consciousness, it’s valuable to keep an open mind and explore both scientific findings and experiential practices. Reflecting on how the brain filters information can deepen understanding of our nature and potentially expand awareness beyond the daily cognitive experience.
