Pretty little liars, gossip girl, dynasty, Richese (one of the best modern rich African family drama in London and NY)…. Or remember those adult passionate and mysterious dramatic stories ? Yes well we have some for us melanated woman!
- Where Sleeping girls lies :This book it’s about Sade, a teenage girl starting at a new boarding school. She recently lost her father and the author alludes that she may be running from some dark secrets in her past. The day after she arrives to school, her new roommate goes missing while getting thru this academy…
- Tender Beast : are you ready for some twist and turn, family drama? this book is pretty complex, it will have run through a psychological thrillers story with cults and a serial killer. The family dynamics are complicate, all the siblings have to face obstacles that puts them against each other the main character tries to seem perfect and happy on the outside while she is tormented on the inside. She was raised to be the family leader and after her mother death she was asked to protect her brother whom has dark secrets. Secrets that put him first on a list of suspects regarding a murder that happens at the school their mothers funded.
- Ace of Spade : This book is giving me a bit of Pretty Little Things vibes. The book is about two black students, Devon and Chiamaka, who are being targeted by an anonymous bully that goes by the name 'Aces. ' This bully exposes their deep and disturbing secrets to the entire body of Niveus Academy, an elite private high school, through texts
- A Song of Wraith and Ruin: Karina Alahari is the princess of Ziran, she lost her sister and father already. But When her mother, the Sultana is assassinated, Karina does not want to carry the burden of rulings and looks for a way to resurrect her mother for which will involve dark magic and a human sacrifice; the winner of Solstasia festival. Malik just wanted to be free from the war, he saw that into the Solstasia festival in the city. During his attempt a evil spirit kidnaps his sister and as payment into the city, Malik makes a deal to kill Karina, Princess of Ziran, for Nadia’s freedom. The first in a fantasy duology inspired by West African folklore in which a grieving crown princess and a desperate refugee find themselves on a collision course to murder each other to resurrects and get their family members back despite their growing attraction.

Beyond the fantastic titles we've just explored – from the gripping suspense of Liselle Sambury's psychological thrillers, where every page twist keeps you guessing, to the vibrant fantasy worlds crafted by authors like Roseanne A. Brown and Nnedi Okorafor, who expertly weave West African folklore into breathtaking adventures – there's a whole universe of Black literature waiting to be discovered. One of my favorite ways to unearth new reads is through online communities. BookTok and Bookstagram are buzzing with passionate readers sharing recommendations you might not find elsewhere. Following literary critics, book bloggers, and influencers who passionately champion diverse authors is also a fantastic strategy. Don't forget to explore lists from prestigious literary awards like the National Book Award, the NAACP Image Awards, or the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award; these often highlight groundbreaking works that deserve a spot on your shelf. Many independent bookstores also curate special sections for Black authors, and just stepping into one can lead to an unexpected treasure. Libraries are also incredible resources, often featuring curated lists and displays celebrating Black History Month or other cultural events. Beyond the specific genres of fantasy, romance, and thrillers we've touched upon, I wholeheartedly encourage you to explore the incredible breadth of Black authorship. Have you delved into powerful historical fiction that brings forgotten stories to life with nuance and emotion, offering windows into different eras and experiences? Or perhaps thought-provoking contemporary fiction that tackles modern societal issues with sharp insight and relatable characters? Authors like Ebony LaDelle and Nicola Yoon, while celebrated for their captivating romance, often weave deeper themes of self-discovery, identity, and the complexities of human connection into their stories that resonate long after the last page. And for those who appreciate insightful cultural commentary and personal essays, Nichole Perkins offers a brilliant, witty voice, blending pop culture analysis with heartfelt reflection on her own journey. The sheer variety of voices and stories is truly astounding. Reading diverse books truly enriches your reading life in countless ways.
