sci fi books for the girlies!!

I just finished Red Rising, which is what inspired me to make this list!!

Red Rising and Dark Matter are both very dude-bro, if you catch my drift, so be prepared for a lotttt of testosterone 🤪 that being said, Red Rising was very fun and familiar, à la The Hunger Games and Ender’s Game. And Dark Matter is now a show on AppleTV, so read it before you watch!

Project Hail Mary is easily one of my favorite books of all time. It’s funny, it’s sad, it’s very science-y but not hard to understand. It’s told in present-day with some flashbacks to the past as you figure out how the main character ended up in that scenario. You will LOVE the sidekick in the present-day timeline! I still think about him alllll the time.

On Earth as It Is on Television is more witty and humanity-focused, despite featuring a (peaceful??) alien invasion. Four different people experience the invasion in different ways and you’ll even get POVs from a cat.

Add these to your summer tbr if you’re lacking some sci-fi and follow me on insta @ molly.readz for more recs and reviews <3

... Read moreAs a fellow bookworm, I know how exciting it is to dive into a new sci-fi world, but sometimes the genre can feel a bit intimidating. Many people think sci-fi is all about super complex physics or impenetrable jargon, but that's definitely not always the case! There are so many accessible reads out there that are character-driven and packed with incredible stories without requiring a science degree. Take Project Hail Mary, for example. It's a prime example of an “easy sci-fi book to read” or “light science fiction” because while it deals with a serious mission and scientific concepts, it's presented in such an engaging, humorous, and deeply human way. You genuinely feel for the main character and his mission for “humanity's last chance” in a “lost in space” scenario. It’s truly one that will make you laugh and maybe even shed a tear – definitely one of my “best scifi book” picks! If you're on the hunt for “books like Wayward Pines” or the “best sci fi thriller books,” modern sci-fi has so much to offer. The high stakes and intense plots in books like Red Rising and Dark Matter are incredibly gripping. Red Rising throws you into a “martian colony” with “Hunger Games-esque arena-style fighting,” making it a page-turner. Dark Matter, with its exploration of “multiple universes” and a unique take on “time travel,” keeps you on the edge of your seat, making it a fantastic thriller. Beyond pure thrills, many sci-fi stories delve into “dystopian” themes, exploring what happens when society faces a “draconian surveillance state” or grapples with “themes of trauma and loss.” These novels are brilliant for keeping you utterly engrossed while also making you think. It’s also amazing how rich the genre is with “novels with strong female leads” and compelling “female protagonists.” Whether they are intelligent scientists, fierce rebels, or ordinary people navigating extraordinary circumstances, these characters drive truly powerful narratives. If you're specifically looking for “affordable sources for sci-fi ebooks with strong female protagonists,” I always recommend checking your local library's digital collection or exploring platforms that offer discounted ebooks. Diverse voices are making sci-fi more vibrant than ever, offering fresh perspectives on our future and humanity. Ultimately, sci-fi isn't just about futuristic gadgets; it often mirrors our own world, exploring human nature, societal structures, and our place in the universe. Some stories even blend genres beautifully, incorporating “magical realism” or leading characters into a “parallel universe” for a truly unique reading experience. For instance, On Earth as It Is on Television offers a fresh take on an “alien invasion” with a charming “pov from a cat (!!!)” and a focus “more on humanity.” Don’t be afraid to explore different subgenres—from epic space operas to thought-provoking cyberpunk, and from intricate time travel plots to profound explorations of consciousness. There’s a perfect sci-fi read out there for every mood and interest, ready to transport you to another dimension!
