Birth has been tugging at me for a long time.

I’ve lived it — twice — in my own body, in my own bones. Birth cracked me open in ways I’ll never fully have words for. It taught me how vulnerable, powerful, unpredictable, and deeply human this chapter of life is.

I’ve spent over a decade documenting weddings, families, milestones — life in motion. And quietly, in the background, I’ve known that birth belongs here too. It just took time to arrive at it with the care and respect it deserves.

I’m a mother of two. I know what it feels like to labor, to surrender control, to trust a room full of people while your entire world shifts in an instant. I also know what it feels like in those first hours after — the stillness, the shock, the tenderness, the way time feels suspended.

I’m opening space for birth stories, photographed here in McHenry County, Illinois.

Not with direction. Not with performance. But with presence, restraint, and respect for the person doing the most important work in the room.

This isn’t an announcement meant to convince anyone. It’s simply me naming something that has been unfolding slowly, carefully, and honestly.

For now, the images I’m sharing are my own — my births, my Fresh 48 moments — photographed by someone I trusted deeply, who happened to be both my nurse and a former bride of mine. It feels full-circle and exactly how this chapter should begin.

This work is sacred to me. Because birth is sacred. And it deserves to be witnessed with care.

If this speaks to you, I’m here. If it doesn’t, that’s okay too. 🤍

A gentle note: This post includes non-graphic images from my own birth and early postpartum hours. Please take care of yourself as you move through it.

... Read moreBirth is one of the most profound chapters in a person's life, a moment that is both raw and transformative. As expressed through the lens of a mother of two and a seasoned documentary photographer, birth is not just an event but a sacred journey that deserves to be witnessed with care and respect. Having experienced labor and the first precious hours postpartum personally, the author highlights the unpredictable and deeply human nature of birth — the vulnerability intertwined with immense strength. Birth photography captures more than just images; it tells stories of trust, surrender, and the powerful bond between the birthing person and their support team. These photos serve as timeless keepsakes of moments that often feel suspended in time — the stillness, tenderness, and shock that accompany bringing new life into the world. Documenting birth requires sensitivity and presence rather than direction. The photographer’s mission is to honor the significance of this work by capturing it authentically, without performance, allowing the story to unfold naturally. Importantly, birth photography can offer validation and connection to new and expecting mothers who find comfort in seeing these intimate moments shared openly. It helps normalize the complexities of labor and postpartum experiences, fostering a deeper understanding of motherhood’s realities. Additionally, it supports the expression of emotions that many find difficult to put into words but are powerfully conveyed through images. This approach aligns with the wider movement towards respectful maternity care that values dignity, autonomy, and compassionate support. Sharing personal birth stories and images contributes to breaking societal taboos around birth and postpartum recovery while empowering families to honor their unique experiences. For those considering birth photography, finding a photographer who respects your wishes and prioritizes your comfort is crucial. It is a collaboration built on trust — a safe space where the birthing person feels held and honored. Whether these are your own birth moments or you wish to document someone else’s, recognizing the sacredness embedded in these hours enriches the impact of the photographs. Embracing birth photography on one’s own terms reflects a growing appreciation for the power of visual storytelling in capturing life’s pivotal moments. The photos from McHenry County, Illinois, represent more than just memories — they are an intimate testament to the strength, tenderness, and humanity involved in birth, inviting all to bear witness with presence and respect.
