Stuck abroad this CNY? 🧧

One of my favorite ways to celebrate was by decorating my living space with red lanterns and paper cuttings to bring that festive vibe indoors. It’s amazing how little details like a 福 (fortune) character or some fairy lights can instantly lift your spirits. Exploring local community events is another great way to get into the holiday mood. I once attended a lion dance performance at Chinatown, which was vibrant and thrilling—I recommend checking out similar festivities nearby. These events are perfect for making new friends and feeling connected despite the distance from home. Food is always central during CNY. I’ve enjoyed hosting small reunion dinners with friends, cooking hot pot or buying familiar delicacies to share. It helps to personalize these meals with your own twist, making the celebration feel warm and special. If cooking isn’t feasible, local Asian grocery stores often stock traditional items for you to enjoy. Most importantly, remember you’re not alone. There are thousands of international students sharing the same experience, and joining a community—whether through student groups or online platforms—can provide support and a sense of belonging. Celebrating together, even virtually, can turn the New Year into a meaningful and joyful occasion despite the miles from home.
