YouTube is adding new measures to control the use of minors. Using AI, it automatically detects users under the age of 18. The system will analyze many factors, such as the type of videos searched and watched, including the age of the account. If AI evaluates that it is a teenager's account, it will disable the display of digital wellbeing and turn on the digital wellbeing mode to help take care of the health of use and immediately increase restrictions on inappropriate content.

In the past, YouTube already had a mode for users under the age of 13 (pre-teens) and teens 13-18 (teens), but it had to be activated on its own. The new measures will automatically help detect and activate the mode for teens, reducing the problem that some children and teenagers may avoid safety settings.

If the AI system misdetects, users who are wrongly identified as under 18 must confirm their age by uploading their ID card, or using their credit card information to unlock their teenage mode, which has long been a way used by Google to verify their identity on various platforms.

The measure will begin trial runs on a small group of U.S. users within the next few weeks, before expanding it to include a wide spectrum of users and with the opportunity to continue to apply in other countries. YouTube reiterates that the measure aims to create a safe environment for minors, reduce the risk of inappropriate content, and help make YouTube use for teens safer in both the short and long term.
