Microsoft released a new feature on Windows 11 called Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD) that was developed to solve slow-loading and jerky games the first time they were played. The main reason is the real-time "compile shader," which consumes both machine time and power. The new feature will be first enabled on ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X portable gaming machines before expanding to regular PCs in the future.

The ASD operation is to move the shader compile stage into the cloud. DirectX created a central format called State Object Database (SODB) to store the compiled shaders. They are then included in the Precompiled Shader Database (PSDB) and attached to the game file on the Xbox App. When the player first opens the game, the game pulls the shader from a pre-prepared Windows cache, skipping the compiling process previously done on the machine. If the driver is updated, the system will automatically detect and update the cache.

The obvious result from the Avowed game test was that the first entry time was shortened by up to 85%. Besides getting into the game more sensitive, it saved batteries because it no longer required the CPU to work hard on compiling shaders. The feature also reduced the spasms or Shader Stuttering that used to annoy many gamers.

In its early days, ASD would only support games downloaded through the Xbox App, but Microsoft has plans to make it available to other platforms like Steam or Epic through the Agility SDK to be released in September. If ubiquitous as intended, the feature could become a new standard that turns the PC gaming experience noticeably faster and more fluid.
