Microsoft is experimenting with a new cooling method for every generation of increasingly hot AI chips, using microfluid technology to help cool them, because instead of installing a cold plate or blocking water, as is common.

They chose to gouge a small groove, carve it directly onto the silicon, allowing the liquid to flow through it, causing the heat to be pulled from the source, not through the same heat exchanger.

Microsoft test results showed that because this system allows cooling three times better than the cold plate and reduces the maximum temperature of the GPU by up to 65%. It also uses AI to capture the hotspot on the chip to determine the flow of cooling water more accurately.

If this technology goes ahead, it can make servers eat less space, save energy in data centers, and extend the life of GPUs or chips. This is a big deal because Microsoft sees that in five years, the traditional cold plate may be out of place. They are currently working with partners to improve from package, coolant selection, to practical application to the entire server.

Although it is not yet certain whether this technology will come off the chip for general users in the future, there are also questions, such as if a small pipe in the chip is blocked, will cause the GPU to collapse, or how difficult it will be to maintain and clean it up, but even then, it must be acknowledged that it is an interesting idea and could become the future of the next generation of AI chips.
