A Reddit user named Toast _ Soup said that his computer was slowing down, and he decided to install a completely clean new Windows 11. After installation, he found that the full backup D and E drives were locked with BitLocker and the Recovery Key system, which he never created or knew existed. When he tried to recover the data, it was unsuccessful because BitLocker was designed to be most secure. Without a key, he could not access the data again.

The reason why this happens is because some Windows 11 automatically activates BitLocker immediately when a user logs in with a Microsoft account during the default settings. The system encrypts the entire drive and stores the key in the cloud, but sometimes the key is unsynced, causing when reset or re-down the system, the entire file is permanently locked.

Experts warn that this problem may be caused by factory new machines or some hard disk boxes that the system views as permanent and automatically encrypted drives, as well as may reduce SSD speeds because data must be encrypted and decrypted all the time.

If you are using Windows 10 or 11, check Settings > Privacy & Security > Device encryption. If you are open, check your Microsoft account and save your key immediately. If you want to continue using this feature, or close it if you don't need it. You can make multiple backups to prevent repeated events. When BitLocker is locked, there is no key in your hand, there is almost no recovery.
