Rumor Apple may resume hiring Intel to manufacture chips, with a new report suggesting that Apple is considering giving Intel the manufacturer of the M7 family's initial version of the chip, which is expected to be used in the MacBook Air, iPad Air, and iPad Pro models 2027 onwards.

Recent tests indicate that Apple has already experimented with manufacturing Intel's 18A chip, a technology below 2 nm, and if the quality, performance, and production power evaluations meet the standards, it is highly likely that Intel will actually start manufacturing chips for Apple in mid-2027.

The move echoes Apple's efforts to reduce its dependence on TSMC, which produces almost all of Apple Silicon today, coupled with momentum from the U.S. government through the CHIPS Act program that wants to pull back advanced chip manufacturing jobs.

The Ming-Chi Kuo report also states that Apple already uses the PDK of the 18A-P node, and the test results are classified as "good enough to move forward," with Intel only responsible for the ordinary M-series model. The Pro and Max models will continue to be manufactured by TSMC intact for the highest level of stability.

For Intel, this may be the most important deal in years, because getting Apple as a customer will lift confidence in Intel Foundry Services and potentially pull other chipmakers into the service. Intel, meanwhile, is speeding up its plant expansion in Arizona and Ohio to support mass production of 18A nodes.

However, Intel also had to prove several key factors. The yield rate had to hit 80-90%, the wafer quality had to be TSMC equivalent, including the production line had to be highly stable, a standard that Apple was extremely strict on.

If all goes according to plan, we may have seen the first Apple Silicon models made by Intel actually go on sale during 2027-2028, and this could be a big turning point for both Apple, Intel and the global chip industry.
