Samsung Electronics revealed a major breakthrough in memory after a research team from Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT) developed a new NAND technology based on the pheroelectric transistor (FeFET). This research was published in the journal Nature and featured a 96% reduction in energy consumption compared to traditional NAND.

The heart of this technology lies in the conversion of materials to hafnium oxide, which has ferroelectric properties, allowing the transistor to store electrical state on its own, resulting in a drop in the pass voltages to almost zero, thus eliminating the need to power all layers when reading or writing data, which is the main reason why the 3D-era NAND with hundreds of stacked layers consumed high power.

Simulation results suggest that the 286-layer structure can reduce power by around 94% and at 1,024-layer levels by more than 96%, while also supporting the storage of the original 5-bit-per-cell (PLC), 4-bit-per-cell (QLC) and the original 3-bit-per-cell (TLC) levels, making it the highest density in today's industry, making both speed, capacity and heat efficient simultaneously.

Although the work is still in the research stage, this result has great implications for the IT industry, from smartphones that may have longer batteries to reduce the heat of AI work to data centers and cloud systems that want to save more energy. It also opens the way for future devices to develop thinner, lighter and more efficient.

Samsung has yet to specify the actual production timeline, but according to the NAND technology circuit, it is expected that we may see a commercial prototype by 2026-2027, which, if it materializes, would certainly be one of the most important milestones of the modern storage world.
