Discord came north. Became a Chrome competitor over RAM eating. 🚨

Discord acknowledged that after Windows apps used RAM so much heavier that some found that it hit nearly 4GB, which was recently activated. The main reason was the move to Electron, causing each server, chat room, and features to work like opening Chrome tabs one by one. When left open without restarting, the program gradually consumed more RAM, resulting in an observable sluggish machine.

This problem is not new in the Windows app industry, because many companies choose to use Electron or WebView2 to develop more easily, but users have to take on more RAM and CPU and overall dropout performance. Even Microsoft Teams use WebView2 and eat 2GB of RAM so chilly that WhatsApp has already encountered the same drama after switching to WebView2.

To alleviate the problem, Discord started testing an automatic app restart feature when RAM usage reached a certain level, but only when the user was in AFK for more than 30 minutes and not in the voice or video room, intended as a way to clear memory that would not bother the user too much.

This is not fair to blame Electron alone because the Discord app itself used to use overworked commands, such as a large set of PowerShell calls to read system data instead of using the API directly, although this has been modified.

But it reflects that there are many more details to improve, and this problem of overresources is also common to many companies, so that the question of whether Microsoft should set a darker standard of resource use before other Windows programs use too many resources.
