Don't guess. Use AI to translate the language on the screen.

In the old days, many friends believed that there were many friends who had finished playing Japanese games without translating them, which is what many couldn't help but think that if they read the story from the beginning, the experience of playing would have been much more fun and fun with the game, especially the old games released only in Japan. Foreign players of the time had almost no choice but to guess the story from the images, characters, and chronology.

.

Currently, AI technology is starting to help solve these language walls. One of the interesting tools is Interpreter, an open source project from developer Bertrand Quenin designed to translate Japanese game languages in real time while playing. The program can capture Japanese text from the game screen through the OCR system, then translate it into English, and display an instant overlay on the game in Real Time.

.

The hallmark of Interpreter is that it runs entirely offline. It does not rely on any commercial cloud or API. It is free to use, no charge, and also maintains user privacy. All text data is processed locally only. For translation display, it is available in Banner mode that acts like a subtittle, and in-place mode that translates directly into the original Japanese text.

.

Technically, Interpreter relies on MeikiOCR for retrieving text from in-game images, and uses the Sugoi V4 language model in its Japanese-to-English translation. It supports use on Windows, Linux, and macOS. Even at the start, it may find latency or accuracy that is still uneven, but the settings and model cache can be locally adjusted to allow for slippery use.

.

Although Interpreter still has compatibility limitations with some emulators, it is considered another milestone that allows modern players to more easily understand the storyline of old Japanese games, no longer relying on guesses like in the past.
