There was a shock attack on the Bilibili platform when one user posted a test clip of a new MSI GeForce RTX 5090 Gaming Trio OC screen card, but instead of getting the usual boot footage, it turned spark and white smoke rushed out of the card immediately after power-on, until it had to rush to cut off the emergency power.

The owner stated that he had recently upgraded to a pair of RTX 5090 with a 1300W power supply and was recording the first power-up video after replacing the main hardware, something he normally does every time when critical equipment is replaced.

After the incident, he removed the card to check it out, found that the wires from the PSU had not burned and used the original wires that came with the Power Supply. When trying to switch back to the original RTX 5060, the system could function normally, making it quite clear that the problem was caused by the RTX 5090 itself. There were also burn traces on the board, and some parts of the cooling kit were left with heat marks.

The regular version of the RTX 5090 is not officially available in China. Only the RTX 5090D and 5090D V2 versions are available in China. This card is therefore a self-imported product, resulting in the inability to claim insurance against the domestic MSI and may have to be exported abroad if you want to claim it, which has additional procedures and costs.

Although this is not the first time, because there was previously an MSI GeForce RTX 4090 Gaming Trio case, smoke occurred while in use, but for the RTX 5090, this case is one of the first events to have a clear recording clip. The root cause is still waiting for the results to be reviewed.
