Raising people = wasteful, raising AI = worthwhile 🚨
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, took the stage at an Express Adda event hosted by The Indian Express to answer questions about ChatGPT and the issue of AI energy consumption that has hit the tide of criticism for being very wasteful in recent times.

One of the allegations that was shared online was that, once asked ChatGPT, it used up to 17 gallons of water to cool the data center, which he explicitly denied was data that did not match the truth, and was a figure from an old cooling system that is now not in use in the traditional way.

He maintains that quoting such figures is an inerrancy, and also argues that typing one command uses the equivalent power of charging 1.5 iPhones, which is not the truth. The actual figures use much less power than that.

But he acknowledges that the growth of AI has led to a global increase in energy demand, and sees this as driving the world to accelerate the development of alternative energy sources such as nuclear, wind and solar to support higher processing demand in the future.

The most critical point is that he compared the energy cost of AI to humans. He saw that society measures AI by unfair standards because it often directly compares the energy used to train models to human labor. Even if a human needs about 20 years to grow, learn and consume a lot of resources to be able to think analytically, he noted that if it is measured at one answer, after the model is trained, AI will probably even have better energy efficiency than humans.

However, the commentary pointed a strong wave of criticism; many considered that objects like technology should not be compared to the value of humanity, and reiterated that AI should only be a life support tool, not something that has been raised against or replaced by humans, until a wave of debate and widespread opposition on the online world followed.
