One Reddit user expressed his displeasure after claiming that his PC had been automatically upgraded from Windows 10 to Windows 11 without ever pressing confirmation.

He relates that over the past 1-2 months, he has been constantly notified to upgrade to Windows 11, both as a pop-up and as an Install update option that appears close to the power down button or restart, despite every rejection, but one day after leaving the computer on and taking a shower for about half an hour, when he returned to find that the system was installing Windows 11 in-place upgrade, much to the displeasure of the MPC, to the point of calling to blame Microsoft.

The incident took place after Windows 10 ended its core support last October. Currently, users can still receive security updates only through the Extended Security Updates (ESU) project, while Microsoft is trying to push users to move to Windows 11 for full support.

Microsoft previously released an update to KB5001716, which involved notifications and an urge to upgrade the Windows version, and some cases were reportedly installed without users noticing.

Windows does not normally install major feature updates if the user does not grant permissions, so it is still not possible to confirm for sure whether this event was a system fault or caused by some condition overlooked by the user.

The case thus became another point of contention about Microsoft's approach to upgrading and the line between security and user consent in the modern era.
