After Microsoft stopped supporting Windows 10 last October and released the last cumulative update to the code KB5066835 / KB5068164, it turned out that this update left an important bug - a USB mouse and keyboard that did not work in Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) or as a Windows system recovery tool.

This problem has quite a lot of impact, because once you get into WinRE, the user will not be able to control anything, even if you enter the system recovery tool normally, but the USB keyboard and mouse will not respond, making menu options almost unavailable, whether it is safe mode or using System Restore to reverse the system before the problem.

In fact, when we use the computer normally, it may not be a problem because the WinRE tool is usually used only when the system has a problem. For example, when the driver is updated, there is a continuous screen or the boot system does not appear, so that the recovery tool is required to fix the system. But in this case, it turns out that when the time really relies on WinRE, the control device like the keyboard and mouse does not work, the user can solve almost any problems.

Importantly, since KB5066835 is the last Windows 10 update and Microsoft itself has already discontinued the system support for casual users (if not subscribed to Extended Security Updates or ESU), this problem seems to be a time bomb on the system, resulting in WinRE being unavailable for nearly five months before Microsoft officially confirmed the problem in February.

Most recently, Microsoft has already released a new update, KB5075039, to fix the aforementioned bug, updating support for Windows 10 versions 21H2 and 22H2, and after installation, Windows Recovery Environment will resume normal use.

However, before installing the update, users should make sure that the machine's Recovery Partition has at least 250MB of free space to successfully install the update. Windows normally creates a hidden partition to store WinRE at the end of the drive, measuring about 500MB to 1GB. But on some computers, especially those from manufacturers (OEMs), the partition size may be determined itself, leaving insufficient space for installing this update.
