Intel officially announced joining the "Terafab" project, or Elon Musk's large chip factory, in partnership with Tesla, SpaceX and xAI to develop chip manufacturing technology for supporting the future of AI and robotics.

Intel's role in this project is to help overhaul all new chip manufacturing processes and bring a large scale of chip design, manufacturing and packaging expertise to drive Terafab's critical goal of producing up to 1 terawatt per year (1 TW / year) of processing power.

The move is also consistent with previous signs; the latter Elon Musk had previously indicated that it was considering a partnership with Intel as its current chip factories could not expand production capacity to keep up with Tesla's and its subsidiaries' demand for AI hardware, most recently Intel also revealed that it had welcomed Elon Musk to its headquarters over the weekend, echoing that the project was starting to move forward more seriously.

For Terafab, it will reportedly be built in Austin, Texas, near the Giga Texas plant, with the concept of a one-stop facility, combining all key steps in one place, from design to manufacturing to chip packaging, to reduce dependence on outside manufacturers.

The chips produced will be deployed in a variety of applications, both in Tesla cars, Optimus robots, as well as SpaceX's infrastructure and xAI's in-space data centers. Although Intel has yet to reveal further technical details, Intel Foundry's entry has put the company back in the key points of the AI chip industry and could become a major turning point of future competition.
