Electronic waste is valuable. Japan recycles up to 90% of its lithium batteries.
Japan is aggressively moving forward with the development of lithium-ion battery recycling technology in order to reduce its dependence on foreign resources; the latter is a country that has almost no mines of its own and must import almost all of its key raw materials like lithium, cobalt and nickel.

Most recently, JX Metals Circular Solutions, a JX Advanced Metals subsidiary, has successfully recovered up to 90% of lithium from battery life-out batteries from less than 50%. It is one of the highest recycling rates in the world. The factory in Tsuruga, Fukui Prefecture, has begun operations, allowing the technology to be deployed on an industrial scale.

The recycling process starts by dismembering old batteries and burning them to reduce non-metallic components, first grinding the rest into "Black Mass," a powder rich in precious metals, and then using a hydrometallurgy process that is chemical extraction in liquid form to extract lithium in the form of lithium hydroxide that can be immediately reused to produce new batteries. This also reduces carbon emissions by about 40% compared to traditional processes.

This achievement means a great deal to Japan economically and resource security; the government aims to be able to recycle 70% of lithium by 2030, of which the 90% figure is considered to far exceed the target, and in line with new laws that force the collection of batteries from electronic devices to be recycled.

However, a major challenge remains that only about 14% of used battery storage systems now officially enter the recycling process, while many batteries, especially those from used electric vehicles, are exported abroad, unfortunately losing valuable resources.
