Microsoft began testing the new-look Run dialog on Windows 11 in its preview version, Build 26300.8346, as a more modern overhaul of the system-coupled address feature since the Windows 95 era, both design and performance.

Run dialog is an important tool of naughty line users. By pressing Win + R, you can type commands, open programs, or access folders immediately. The hallmarks are speed and simplicity.

The new page is designed after Windows 11's Fluent Design and directly supports Dark Mode, but what's interesting is that Microsoft says the new version of the Run dialog is "faster than ever." The old one takes about 103ms to display, while the new version is down to about 94ms and has a chance to make it faster.

Behind the development, Microsoft studied real user behavior, and found that speed was an important factor, such as that some users used Run as a text format clearing aid by pasting and copying, which required a quick response.

Another turning point was to cut off the "Browse" button after only 0.0038% of people used it out of tens of millions of users, so that the UI remained as simple as possible, while adding new capabilities such as typing ~\ to access Linux instant user folders and with icons to distinguish items more easily.

The new Run dialog was also developed with C # / WinUI 3 and inspired by PowerToys Run. However, this feature is not automatically enabled. Users must open it in Settings and now only open Windows Insider before gradually leaving it to the general user in the future.
