Secretly changed the square
Google may start changing the free storage policy of new accounts, with all users originally receiving 15GB of space for shared use on Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos. Most recently, accounts that have not yet confirmed their identity with a phone number may only receive 5GB of default space.
.
The data was reported by 9to5Google after it was found that some users who signed up for a new Google account received a notification message during the account setting that to unlock the full 15GB of free space, the phone number must be connected to the account. Google indicated that it would use the phone number to confirm that the storage increase occurred "only once per person."
.
Google also found that Google adjusted the text on the official help page from the original "Google account comes with 15GB of free space" to "up to 15GB." According to the Internet Archive, this change has been going on since last March.
.
However, such a policy may not affect most users, as current Google account applications often already have forced confirmation of the phone number, but there are still some cases where this step can be bypassed, such as setting up a new Android phone without a SIM card.
.
It is anticipated that this change aims to prevent subscriptions to backup accounts, or many ACPIT, for bringing 15GB of free space to unlimited reuse, as well as to reduce account creation problems by bots. At the same time, analysts see another factor may come from higher memory and storage hardware costs, forcing Google to start controlling more costs as well.
