Anthropic seems to be facing criticism from Claude Desktop users on Windows. The latter is reported to have used an unusually large amount of memory (RAM), with some cases being found to have ingested several gigabytes of RAM despite not having started taking any features seriously.

The problem was widely discussed on GitHub and the user community. The latter found that Claude Desktop would turn on the Hyper-V Virtual Machine (VM) to run behind the scenes automatically when the program was turned on, resulting in a Vmmem processor running around 1.8GB of RAM from the start, even if the user did not run the Agent Mode or Cowork feature that relied on such a VM.

Many users have stated that pre-empted RAM affects the performance of a machine, especially a computer with 16GB of memory, where the loss of nearly 2GB of RAM since the program opened is considered a relatively high proportion. It has also been further reported that some machines experience Memory Leak symptoms or incomplete memory returns. This makes prolonged continuous use can cause the use of RAM to gradually increase to reach 10-20GB levels in some cases.

Another point of dissatisfaction to users is that there is currently no option within the program to disable such VMs directly. To disable them, it is necessary to disable Windows' own Virtual Machine Platform or Hyper-V features. This may result in some of Claude's features being unavailable.

This has caused a wave of comparisons with Google Chrome, which has always been known for its high RAM usage, with many users teasing that Chrome uses RAM because it opens multiple tabs at once, while Claude uses a lot of RAM since it has not yet started. However, the problem seems to be limited to Claude Desktop on Windows. Use through the browser website Claude.ai has not yet found the same report.

Anthropic has so far not released an official statement on the issue, but a number of users have called on the company to add options for shutting down VMs running behind the scenes, or improving memory management in the next version, to address the over-use of system resources.
