How to Take Effective Notes in College ✨✍️

One of my professors shared this method with my class freshman year, and I am so grateful that he did!

As a freshman who never took effective notes in high school, I had no idea how to begin in college. If you take any advice from this post, these are the two most helpful tips I can offer:

✍️ 1. Write, rewrite, and rewrite again! The more you write down important information, the more it becomes engrained in your head. Reading the information is nowhere near as effective as copying!

✍️ 2. Handwrite your notes! It is scientifically proven to help you retain information much more than typing. Some professors speak quickly, and it is totally fine to type your notes during lectures to help you keep up. Just don’t forget to handwrite those notes later!

I use the Notability app for my notes, it’s $14.99/year, but for my purposes it’s worth it! I justify it by thinking of the money I save on buying cute notebooks each semester 🤭 Goodnotes is a fantastic alternative as well, and a bit cheaper! For free app recommendations, I’d use Notion or Evernote for typed notes, and Apple Notes for handwritten! 🫶🏼

Jot down key concepts and any questions you may have. This preparation not only sets a foundation for your understanding but also aids in active participation during lectures. 3. **Utilize Lecture Slides**: If your professor provides slides beforehand, bring them to class. This allows you to focus on adding additional comments and insights as your professor elaborates on the content. It's an effective method to ensure you capture all necessary information. 4. **Create Summary Sheets**: Before exams, compile your lecture and textbook notes into comprehensive summary sheets. These sheets should highlight key terms and concepts, important diagrams, and practice exercises that cover the material. By following these structured strategies, you'll create a comprehensive and organized repository of knowledge that will serve as a valuable resource for your studies. Additionally, using apps like Notability or Goodnotes can enhance your digital note-taking experience, while free options like Notion or Apple Notes provide flexible alternatives that still support effective learning.
