Boomer Parents/grandparents
Over the lovely Thanksgiving holiday my FIL and my father both over 60 had plenty to say and criticism about my children’s behavior and what they wore. For the most part I handled it calmly but after the fact my body is still boiling. How are we handling the vast differences in the way our kids are raised now compared to the way they remember parenting? I don’t do “time out” I also let my son wear whatever is comfortable on his body, and they were being kids at dinner- the feral kids they are meant to be- and they just couldn’t handle it. So, what are we doing to parent the Boomers?

During family gatherings such as Thanksgiving, these differences often become more pronounced, leading to potential criticisms and misunderstandings. Boomers may find it difficult to adjust to what they see as lax parenting, while younger parents may feel judged or dismissed. However, fostering open communication and setting clear boundaries can help ease tensions. For instance, explaining the rationale behind parenting choices, like avoiding time-outs in favor of more empathetic discipline methods, can cultivate respect and patience. Another helpful strategy is to highlight the universality of wanting the best for the children, regardless of style. Sharing stories about the values both generations hold dear—like kindness, responsibility, and health—can build common ground. Additionally, involving grandparents in decision-making or creating opportunities for them to bond with grandchildren without focusing on behavior can improve relationships. Importantly, embracing flexibility is key. Allowing kids to be 'feral' or relaxed during family meals might feel frustrating to Boomers but can be framed as fostering creativity and independence. Acknowledging these differences without dismissiveness helps reduce conflict and promotes understanding. Ultimately, parenting the Boomers, metaphorically speaking, means educating and involving them gently while standing firm on modern parenting philosophies. It’s about mutual respect, patience, and focusing on shared love for the children. This approach leads to healthier family dynamics and happier gatherings where all generations feel valued.
