Easiest Asian language to learn

In the scope of Asian languages, many believe and I concur, Malay / indonesian is the easiest Asian language to learn. Malay and Indonesian share around 90% of their vocabulary. Indonesia nationalized it's version of Malay so that they would be free to standardize their version of Malay as the see fit.

Malay has no tones(like mandarin Thai and vietnamese). It's written with a romanized script(the English alphabet) and it's pronounced as it's spelled. Most words are 2 syllables. There are no verb conjugations.

Malay is also a very useful language. It is spoken by Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei and parts of southern Thailand. Malay has around 290 million speakers according to Wikipedia.

Indonesian is on Duolingo. The Indonesian variety of Malay seems to have the most learning resources for English speakers.

vocabulary:

I = saya

I like = saya suka

I want = saya mau

I have = saya punya

I like fried rice = saya suka nasi goreng

I want chicken = saya mau daging ayam

hello = selamat

thank you = terimah kasi

please = tolong

... Read moreAfter diving into various Asian languages, I can honestly say that my experience learning Malay and Indonesian was by far the smoothest. It truly lives up to its reputation as one of the easiest, especially for English speakers! Many people wonder, 'is Malay or Indonesian easier?' In my journey, I discovered they're incredibly similar, sharing about 90% of their vocabulary, making them almost interchangeable in many everyday contexts. However, if you're deciding which one to focus on, consider the resources available. Indonesian, for instance, often has a wider array of learning materials like the popular Duolingo app, making it a common starting point for foreigners. If your travel plans lean heavily towards Malaysia or Singapore, opting for Malay might give you a slight edge in local nuances, but you'll still be widely understood with Indonesian. What makes these languages so remarkably easy? Beyond the lack of tones and the familiar Roman script (which means you're already halfway there with pronunciation!), their grammatical structure is refreshingly straightforward. Forget complex verb conjugations or gendered nouns – these simply don't exist in Malay or Indonesian. Instead of changing verb endings based on tense or subject, you often use time markers or context. For example, 'I eat' is 'saya makan,' and 'I ate yesterday' is 'saya makan kemarin' (yesterday). Simple! This directness makes forming sentences incredibly intuitive, allowing you to focus on building vocabulary rather than wrestling with intricate grammar rules. To truly accelerate your learning, I highly recommend exploring a variety of resources beyond just apps. While Duolingo is fantastic for building foundational vocabulary, consider investing in a good 'learn Malay book' or an Indonesian textbook. There are many excellent guides designed for self-study that delve deeper into sentence patterns and cultural context. Don't underestimate the power of immersion, even if you're not in Southeast Asia. Watch movies or dramas from Indonesia or Malaysia – you'll pick up conversational phrases and improve your listening comprehension. Platforms like YouTube offer countless channels dedicated to language learning, and you can even find online tutors for one-on-one 'conversation practice'. Imagine yourself exploring the vibrant 'city skylines' of Kuala Lumpur or Singapore, effortlessly ordering food or asking for directions – that motivation can be a powerful tool! Starting to 'read a book' in Malay or Indonesian, even children's books, is a fantastic way to grasp sentence structure and expand your vocabulary in a fun, low-pressure way. From my experience, the sheer practicality of these languages for travel and connecting with millions of people across Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei makes the learning journey incredibly rewarding. It's not just about memorizing words; it's about unlocking a richer understanding of a fascinating part of the world. So, if you're a foreigner wondering which Asian language offers the quickest path to communication, look no further than Malay or Indonesian. You might be surprised how quickly you can achieve fluency!
