Days of the week in japanese

2024/10/13 Edited to

... Read moreHey everyone! When I first started learning Japanese, mastering the days of the week felt like a huge win. It’s so fundamental for planning meetups, understanding schedules, and just generally navigating life in Japan or talking about your week. The original post gives a great start with the romaji, but let's dive a little deeper, especially into the fascinating kanji behind each day and what they actually mean! Knowing the kanji isn't just for reading; it helps you understand the cultural context and makes remembering them so much easier. For instance, did you know that each day of the week in Japanese is associated with a celestial body or element? It's pretty cool once you connect the dots! Let's break them down: Getsuyōbi (月曜日) - Monday: This literally translates to "Moon Day." The kanji 月 (getsu) means moon. So, when you say getsuyōbi, you're essentially saying 'moon day'. It really helped me remember that Monday starts the week, just like the moon (often seen as a beginning in some contexts) starts its cycle. Kayōbi (火曜日) - Tuesday: This one is "Fire Day!" The kanji 火 (ka) means fire. I always pictured Tuesday as a fiery day to tackle tasks, which made kayōbi stick in my mind. Suiyōbi (水曜日) - Wednesday: My personal favorite to remember, this is "Water Day" with the kanji 水 (sui) for water. I think of the middle of the week as a calming, flowing day, like water. Mokuyōbi (木曜日) - Thursday: This translates to "Wood Day" or "Tree Day," using the kanji 木 (moku) for wood/tree. For some reason, I imagine Thursday as a day for growth and stability, like a strong tree. Kin'yōbi (金曜日) - Friday: Ah, the best day of the week for many! This is "Gold Day" or "Metal Day," with the kanji 金 (kin) meaning gold or metal. It feels appropriate for Friday, doesn't it? Like the golden end to the work week! Doyōbi (土曜日) - Saturday: This is "Earth Day," represented by the kanji 土 (do) for earth or soil. Saturday feels grounding and relaxed, perfect for an earth day. Nichiyōbi (日曜日) - Sunday: And finally, we have 日曜日, which is "Sun Day!" The kanji 日 (nichi) means sun or day. So, nichiyōbi is literally 'sun day of the week'. This one is often the easiest for beginners to remember because it aligns with the English "Sunday." I was so happy the first time I recognized 日曜日 in a Japanese calendar! Beyond the individual days, you might also be wondering how to talk about the "weekend in Japanese" or "this week in Japanese." These are super useful! For "weekend," we say 週末 (shūmatsu). It combines the kanji for "week" (週) and "end" (末). So logical, right? I use this all the time when making plans! "Shūmatsu nani shimasuka?" (What are you doing this weekend?) And for "this week," you'll hear 今週 (konshū). This uses 今 (kon), meaning "now" or "this," combined with 週 (shū) for "week." So, literally "this week." For example, "Konshū wa isogashii desu." (I'm busy this week.) Learning these really helped me elevate my daily conversations. Don't be intimidated by the kanji; seeing them broken down like this makes them much more approachable. Keep practicing your getsuyōbi, kayōbi, suiyōbi, mokuyōbi, kin'yōbi, doyōbi, and nichiyōbi, and soon you'll be chatting about your schedule like a pro! Happy studying!
