... Read moreWhen I first started learning Mandarin, one of the first things I tackled was the days of the week. It seemed simple enough, but getting the tones right and remembering the structure took a little practice! I quickly learned that the Chinese system is actually quite logical once you grasp the basic pattern. You'll notice that most days use '星期' (xīngqī), which literally means 'star period' but functions as 'week'. So, to say 'Monday', you just add '一' (yī), which means 'one', after '星期'. Voila, '星期一' (xīngqī yī)! It's like saying 'week one'. This pattern continues through '星期二' (xīngqī èr) for Tuesday, '星期三' (xīngqī sān) for Wednesday, '星期四' (xīngqī sì) for Thursday, and '星期五' (xīngqī wǔ) for Friday. For Saturday, it's 星期六 (xīngqī liù), using 'six'. Now, Sunday is a bit special. While 星期日 (xīngqī rì) is commonly used, where '日' (rì) means 'sun' or 'day', you'll also frequently hear 星期天 (xīngqī tiān), with '天' (tiān) meaning 'sky' or 'day'. Both are perfectly acceptable, so don't worry too much about picking one over the other in casual conversation. I personally found 星期天 easier to remember at first! One tip I found incredibly helpful was to associate each day with its number. So, Monday is week one, Tuesday is week two, and so on. This really helped solidify the pattern in my mind. Also, don't forget about the Pinyin! Getting the tones right is crucial. For xing qi, remember that xīng is a first tone (high and flat), and qī is also a first tone. It takes practice, but consistency is key. I used to just repeat them aloud while doing chores. For example, I'd constantly tell myself, 'Today is Thursday, so it's xing qi si!' Beyond just listing them, knowing how to use them in sentences makes a huge difference. Here are some basic phrases I learned early on: '今天星期几?' (Jīntiān xīngqī jǐ?) - What day is it today? (Literally: Today week what number?) '我星期一有课。' (Wǒ xīngqī yī yǒu kè.) - I have class on Monday. '我们星期五见面吧!' (Wǒmen xīngqī wǔ jiànmiàn ba!) - Let's meet on Friday! '周末愉快!' (Zhōumò yúkuài!) - Happy weekend! (Note: '周末' (zhōumò) is specifically 'weekend', not xingqi.) I also encountered other ways to say 'week', like '礼拜' (lǐbài) and '周' (zhōu). While '星期' is very common, especially in mainland China, '礼拜' is often heard in some southern regions and among older generations, and '周' is more formal or used in combination with other words like '周末' (weekend) or '周一' (Monday, a more informal short form). It's good to be aware of these variations, even if you stick to xingqi for everyday use. To really make them stick, try integrating them into your daily life. Label your calendar days in Chinese, or try to think about what day it is in Mandarin each morning. For example, 'Oh, it's Thursday today, so 星期四!' Or, 'Yay, it's Friday, xing qi wu!' Creating flashcards with xing qi on one side and the corresponding day on the other, or even drawing little pictures for each number, can also be super effective. Before you know it, you'll be rattling off the Chinese days of the week like a pro!
