Save this if you’re self-studying math 📚

Self-studying math used to make me feel like I was hitting a wall over and over again. I’d read something three times, try a problem, and still be like... huh?? 😩 But over time, I realized it wasn’t about getting it right away, it was about showing up consistently and breaking things down piece by piece. Some topics took days to click, but when they finally did, it felt so rewarding.

Now I treat math kind of like learning a new language. I practice regularly, take messy notes, and review the same concept from a bunch of angles until it makes sense. If I’m stuck, I’ll ask ChatGPT to explain it in different ways or try rewriting it in my own words. And keeping a little mistake log? Game changer. It helps me see patterns in what I’m missing. For me, math hasn’t been about being naturally good at it, it’s just been about not giving up 🫶📐

... Read moreSelf-studying math can often feel overwhelming, but it's a rewarding journey that sharpens your analytical skills and enhances problem-solving abilities. To make the most of your self-study experience, consider using a structured approach that includes effective resource selection and study techniques. Start with well-regarded textbooks tailored to your current level. Recommended titles include 'Linear Algebra Done Right' by Axler for linear algebra and 'Calculus' by Stewart for calculus fundamentals. These texts provide the groundwork you need to establish a robust understanding of mathematical concepts. Don't just skim through the proofs; engage with them. Understanding the reasoning behind each step fosters a deeper comprehension and lays a solid foundation for tackling problems. As you practice, focus on solving problems by hand to reinforce your understanding rather than passively watching tutorials. This active engagement is crucial for retention and skill-building. Incorporate the Pomodoro technique to maintain focus and productivity. This method involves studying for short, intense periods followed by breaks, which helps prevent burnout. Revisit older problems periodically without notes to challenge your memory and track your progress. Utilize modern tools like ChatGPT to explain concepts in simpler terms if you're struggling. This can provide alternative perspectives that might resonate better with you. Keeping a mistake log helps identify recurring errors and promotes a problem-solving mindset by allowing you to reflect on and learn from your mistakes. Lastly, consider summarizing chapters in your own words as if you were teaching someone else. This method reinforces your knowledge and highlights areas that require more attention, ensuring a thorough understanding as you progress in your math studies.
