Honest Hour: I tested into remedial math

So if you didn’t know, you actually have to take a math placement test before your first semester of college so that they can see what level you’re at. Since I graduated high school around 7 years before I started attending college, I had to take this test with no practice in math at all. But that’s not the worst part, I actually studied for this math placement exam for weeks before I took it! Then when I took the test, I got my results immediately…. I scored so low they said that I had to start my first semester of my degree in College Algebra. Most of the other students were already starting their first semester in Calc 1 or Calc 2 at least. At first I was pretty upset and even questioned whether I should be getting a Computer Science degree since most of it was going to be math classes. But I knew that it wasn’t because I was dumb, it was because I didn’t have the time or the opportunity to learn how to do math properly! Especially since I had been working straight out of high school with no time to study. So now that I have been in my degree for 3 years I have passed College Algebra, PreCalc, Calc 1, Calc 2, Calc 3, and Discrete Math!

I feel like a math queen now and I’m so glad that I started in a math class that was at my level, so that I could learn the fundamentals properly! If you think that you’re not good at a subject or that you’ll never be able to learn something, just know that everyone starts at the same place! Just because other people seem like they know more than you or are smarter than you, doesn’t mean that you can’t catch up to that level and learn things too!
