Our August adventure through North and South Carolina was truly unforgettable! If you're wondering what to do in these incredible states, especially during the late summer, let me share some of our favorite discoveries and tips from our family's perspective. First off, if you’re planning a family trip, North and South Carolina offer an incredible variety of landscapes and activities. We started our journey wanting to blend relaxation with adventure, and these states delivered! One of the biggest highlights was definitely spending time on the water. In North Carolina, we loved exploring the crystal-clear lakes. Places like Lake Norman or the smaller, more serene Lake Lure provide fantastic opportunities for boating, swimming, and even paddleboarding. My kids absolutely loved feeling the spray on their faces while we cruised around. For those heading to South Carolina, the coastal areas and Lowcountry rivers offer a different kind of aquatic magic. Exploring the salt marshes by kayak or pontoon boat was incredible – we spotted so many unique birds and even a few playful dolphins near the coast! Beyond the water, the 'things to do' list just keeps growing. We are big nature lovers, so wildlife spotting was a huge part of our trip. Every state park we visited, whether in the mountains or near the sea, offered a chance to connect with nature. We saw so many bald eagles soaring overhead, deer grazing peacefully, and a variety of colorful birds. Packing a good pair of binoculars is a must! We found some amazing hiking trails that were perfect for all ages, with stunning views that made every step worth it. Don't underestimate the simple joy of a picnic lunch surrounded by towering pines or overlooking an expansive lake. For families considering a visit, especially in August, here are a few practical tips. We found that booking accommodations like Airbnbs or cabins well in advance was crucial, especially for popular areas. It gave us a comfortable home base after long days of exploring. Also, be prepared for diverse weather – August can be warm and sunny, but sudden thunderstorms can pop up, so light rain gear is a good idea. We always carried plenty of water and snacks, which is essential when you're out exploring with kids. And speaking of exploration, don’t be afraid to veer off the main roads! We discovered some charming small towns with fantastic local eateries and unique shops that weren’t on our initial itinerary. One of my personal recommendations for making the most of your trip is to create a 'photo dump' of all your memories afterwards. It's a wonderful way to relive the journey, share your experiences with friends and family, and inspire future adventures. We're already dreaming about our next Carolina road trip after this incredible August! Whether you're chasing mountain views, relaxing on sandy beaches, or discovering historic towns, North and South Carolina truly have something for every family looking for adventure.
