Things I Wish People Understood About Chronic Illness | What We Wish Others Know

Living with a chronic illness changes so much, and sometimes the hardest part isn't the symptoms—it's feeling misunderstood.

Here's what I wish more people knew:

🤍 We cancel plans because we have to, not because we don't care.

🤍 We miss the version of ourselves before illness too.

🤍 Rest isn't laziness—it's how we keep going.

🤍 Pain and symptoms can change from one hour to the next.

🤍 Looking okay doesn't always mean feeling okay.

🤍 A few kind words can make a really hard day a little easier.

Most of us aren't asking for pity. We're simply hoping for a little more understanding and a little more grace.

If this helped you understand chronic illness a little better, thank you for taking the time to read it. 🌻

... Read moreLiving with a chronic illness often feels like an ongoing battle that most people don't see or understand. One important thing I've learned is that chronic illness is not just about physical symptoms—it's also a mental and emotional challenge. For example, having to cancel plans repeatedly can feel isolating, but it’s a necessity born from managing unpredictable symptoms rather than a lack of care. Rest is often misunderstood as laziness, yet it’s essential for maintaining any semblance of daily function. When my body feels worn down, pushing through without rest only worsens my condition. It’s also important to remember that just because someone looks fine on the outside doesn’t mean they feel well. This discrepancy between appearance and reality can lead to hurtful misunderstandings. Pain and symptoms can fluctuate hourly, making it incredibly difficult to plan activities or maintain consistent energy levels. This unpredictability requires immense strength and flexibility. Moreover, a small gesture of kindness or a few encouraging words can make a huge difference, sometimes turning a particularly hard day into a more manageable one. From personal experience, the grace and patience extended by friends and loved ones help build a supportive environment that can make chronic illness more bearable. It’s not about seeking pity; it’s about fostering understanding. This sense of community and empathy leads to better emotional health and resilience, which are just as crucial as managing physical symptoms. Incorporating these perspectives into daily conversations can help bridge the gap between those living with invisible illnesses and the world around them, creating a kinder, more informed society where everyone feels seen and valued.

💛 If you live with a chronic illness, what do you wish people understood about your journey? Mine is this: Just because I smiled today doesn't mean I wasn't hurting. Sometimes kindness is the best medicine someone can offer. 🌻

living with an invisible illness
You can’t see it… but it’s real. Some days I look “fine” but inside, I’m fighting battles no one else can see. The exhaustion. The flare-ups. The canceling plans. The trying to explain something people don’t understand… It’s not just physical— it’s mental, emotional, and constant.

✨ Things I Wish I Knew Before Being Diagnosed with MCAS, EDS & POTS ✨
Living with MCAS, EDS, and POTS has taught me that healing doesn’t always look like pushing harder. 💜 Rest is productive. 💜 Hydration isn’t optional. 💜 “Looking healthy” doesn’t mean feeling healthy. 💜 It’s okay to cancel plans when your body says no. 💜 Small wins deserve to be celebrated.

God understood the prayers she didn’t have words for.
