Hey fellow adventurers! I just got back from an incredible trip to Alamosa, Colorado, and I absolutely have to share my experience. If you're looking for unique things to do in Colorado that are a bit off the beaten path, Alamosa is your spot! Before my visit, I was scrolling through maps, and I stumbled upon this gem in the San Luis Valley, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. My absolute top recommendation, hands down, has to be the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. Seriously, pictures don't do it justice. Walking up those massive dunes feels like you've landed on another planet. I spent hours sandboarding down them – it was such a thrilling experience! Make sure to rent a sandboard or sled from one of the local shops before you head in; it makes a huge difference. I went in the late afternoon, and the sunset over the dunes was just breathtaking. It's truly a must-do when you're in Alamosa, Colorado. Beyond the dunes, there's so much more to explore. I also hiked to Zapata Falls, which is a short drive from the Sand Dunes. The trail is pretty easy, but getting to the falls requires wading through a cold stream inside a cave, which was an unexpected and super cool adventure! Wear waterproof shoes or be prepared for cold feet. The view of the falls gushing out from the rock crevice is totally worth it. For nature lovers, the Alamosa National Wildlife Refuge is a peaceful escape. I loved spotting various birds and just taking in the serene landscape. It's a great place for a quiet walk or some birdwatching, especially if you need a break from more strenuous activities. If you're into a bit of history and unique experiences, consider hopping on the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad. I didn't get to do a full trip this time, but I heard amazing things about their excursions through the beautiful Colorado landscapes. They often have special events too, so check their schedule! Another place I found fascinating was the San Luis Valley Museum. It gives you a real feel for the rich history and culture of the region, which I always appreciate when traveling. And, of course, you can't visit Alamosa without trying some local eats and drinks! I discovered the San Luis Valley Brewing Company and loved their craft beers. They also have a great menu for a casual dinner. I also found a few charming local cafes for breakfast that really hit the spot. There's a real sense of community here that I adored. My biggest tip for anyone planning to visit Alamosa, CO, is to embrace the outdoors and be ready for some incredible natural beauty. Whether you're sandboarding, hiking to a hidden waterfall, or just enjoying the vast open spaces, Alamosa offers a unique slice of Colorado adventure.
