Have you ever stumbled upon a word that just perfectly encapsulates a feeling you've been trying to express? For me, that word was 'delectation.' It's more than just pleasure; it's a profound sense of delight, enjoyment, and sometimes even sensual pleasure. When I discovered its full meaning, it resonated so deeply with the joy I find in creating, especially on my favorite small canvases. These little pieces become canvases for exploring big emotions and vibrant expressions. The word 'delectation' comes from Latin and evokes a feeling of intense satisfaction. It's not fleeting happiness, but a rich, deep appreciation for something beautiful or enjoyable. For an artist, translating such a nuanced emotion into visual form is a wonderful challenge. I found myself drawn to vibrant hues and intricate patterns, aiming to make the canvas itself an 'expression of delight.' Then there's 'Copious,' another abstract piece, where I just let the rich red and gold background flow with intricate black swirling and concentric patterns, aiming for an abundance of visual interest and a sense of overflowing creativity. These smaller pieces allow me to experiment with such intensity and freedom. And even when I'm not painting abstracts, I find inspiration everywhere. The vibrant pink zinnia flower with its yellow center blooming in a blue pot, or lush purple flowers cascading from a white planter box under a bright sky – they all offer their own 'pops of color' and moments of natural delectation that I try to capture, whether literally or abstractly.
