When I decided to do my first sew-in, that was one of my biggest questions too. From my recent experience, I can tell you it's definitely a process, but so worth it for the results!
First off, preparation is key. This usually starts with a good wash and deep condition of your natural hair. For me, just this step, including detangling and drying (I air-dried partly, then blow-dried), took about 1.5 to 2 hours. You want your hair to be super clean and moisturized before braiding.
Next up is the braid-down. This is crucial because it forms the foundation for your sew-in. The flatter and neater your braids, the better your sew-in will lie. Depending on the complexity of the braid pattern (whether you're doing a leave-out or a full sew-in with a closure), this can take anywhere from 1 to 3 hours. Mine took about 2 hours because I wanted them extra neat and flat. If you're doing it yourself for the first time, budget a bit more time!
Then comes the actual sew-in part, attaching the wefts to your braids. This is where a lot of the time goes. For a full head, tracking and sewing in all the bundles usually takes a good 3 to 5 hours, especially if it's your first time or if you're working with a lot of hair. I spent closer to 4.5 hours carefully stitching everything in, making sure the tension was just right and the tracks were secure. Some people prefer a net for extra security and flatness, which can add a little bit of time but might save you headaches later.
Finally, there's the cutting and styling. This is the fun part where everything comes together! Blending your leave-out (if you have one) with the extensions, cutting layers, or styling it into your desired look can take another 1 to 2 hours. For my first sew-in, I did some basic layering and straightened it, which took me about 1.5 hours.
So, if you add all that up, from start to finish, a sew-in can realistically take anywhere from 7 to 12 hours, or even longer if you're taking your time, doing it yourself, or encounter any snags. My total time was definitely on the higher end, around 9-10 hours, spread over an entire day!
Keep in mind, these times can vary a lot based on:
Your hair length and density: Thicker, longer natural hair might take longer to wash, dry, and braid.
The stylist's speed and experience: A professional stylist might be much faster than someone doing it for the first time at home.
The desired style: A simple straight look might be quicker than intricate curls or a specific cut.
Number of bundles: More bundles mean more sewing time.
Don't rush the process! A well-done sew-in looks amazing and lasts longer. It's an investment of time, but the confidence boost and versatility you get are absolutely worth it. What was your longest sew-in experience?
