When I first learned that turtles cannot come out of their shells, it completely changed how I viewed these fascinating creatures. Most of us grew up seeing cartoons where turtles retreat into their shells like people flee into houses, but in reality, the shell is an inseparable part of their skeleton. As the video explains, the shell is made up of fused ribs, spine, and many bones, making it impossible for a turtle to simply 'step out' of it. I find it incredible that the shell is living tissue with blood vessels and nerves, meaning turtles can actually feel through their shells and injury to it can cause bleeding. This knowledge helped me appreciate the complexity and strength of turtle biology.
