... Read moreEvery year, as Mardi Gras season approaches, I get so excited to bring out all my festive decorations! This year, I’m particularly proud of my new Mardi Gras wreath, which truly captures the spirit of New Orleans. It’s a riot of purple, green, and gold – colors that aren't just pretty, but deeply symbolic for the celebration. Purple represents justice, green stands for faith, and gold signifies power. Knowing the meaning behind these vibrant hues makes decorating even more special, don't you think?
When I was creating this wreath, I focused on incorporating elements that scream 'Mardi Gras.' The glittery peacock feathers add a touch of elegance and whimsy, while the mesh and ribbons in those iconic colors just bring so much life to my front door. And of course, you can't have Mardi Gras without beads and bling! That little sign, 'BEADS & bling IT'S A MARDi GRAS THING!' really ties it all together. It's such a simple phrase, but it perfectly encapsulates the joyful, extravagant nature of the season. I also made sure to include some patterned ribbons featuring fleur-de-lis and crowns, which are classic New Orleans motifs. It’s all about creating that festive atmosphere, even if you can’t be on Bourbon Street!
Beyond just decorating, Mardi Gras is a whole experience. If you're new to it, or just looking to embrace the spirit, there are so many ways to celebrate. One of the most iconic traditions, of course, are the parades. The elaborate floats, the marching bands, and the costumed krewes throwing beads and trinkets – it's an unforgettable spectacle. Even if you're not in New Orleans, you can organize a mini-parade with friends or family, or simply dress up in your best purple, green, and gold attire.
Another must-try is the King Cake! This delicious, often brioche-like, cake is traditionally decorated with the Mardi Gras colors and has a tiny plastic baby hidden inside. Finding the baby usually means it's your turn to host the next King Cake party or bring the next cake. It's a fun communal activity that adds a sweet touch to the season.
For those who love DIY, beyond a beautiful wreath like mine, you can create your own masks, decorate plain white T-shirts with fabric paint and glitter, or even craft small, personalized 'throws' to give to friends. It's all about embracing the creativity and joyous extravagance. Mardi Gras isn't just a single day; it's a whole season of revelry leading up to Fat Tuesday, and every little bit of decoration and participation makes the anticipation even more exciting. Whether you're planning a trip to New Orleans or celebrating from home, infusing your space and spirit with these traditions truly makes it a 'Mardi Gras Thing!'
