Any advice for this anger/depression loop?

I just got back from a 2 week solo trip across North America and while I learned a lot about myself. I’m a really angry and bitter person. And my depression is way worse than I ever realized. I’ve heard people say depression hides behind anger and bitterness, and now I think that’s exactly what’s happening with me.

The trip started okay, but as days passed, loneliness hit hard. Everywhere I looked, people were with partners or friends while I went to the movies, aquarium, and zoo alone. I’ve been depressed for years, but I didn’t know it ran this deep. I used to fake smiles, pretend I was fine around people… but not anymore. Now it’s obvious I’m not okay.

By week 2, I was suicidal, even had to call a local helpline cause the loneliness was too much.

I know my problem, but it feels unfixable. People say “see a therapist”, I am, but therapists can’t fix real world pain. At least I finally get what’s fueling the depression, though. Any advice?

... Read moreExperiencing intense feelings of anger and depression, especially after a profound event like a solo trip, can be incredibly isolating. It's important to recognize that loneliness often magnifies emotional pain, making the anger and bitterness feel overwhelming. Many people find that their anger acts as a shield for deeper sadness or depression, which can create a difficult loop to escape. One helpful approach is to gently acknowledge these feelings without self-judgment. Journaling daily thoughts and emotions can provide clarity and create an emotional outlet. Connecting with communities that understand similar struggles can reduce loneliness—whether online forums, support groups, or local meetups—even if initially it feels daunting. Incorporating small, manageable self-care routines can also make a difference. Mindfulness exercises, such as focused breathing or guided meditation, help ground your awareness and reduce intense mood swings. Physical activity, like walking or gentle yoga, releases endorphins which may ease depressive symptoms. While therapy is invaluable, sometimes supplementing it with other supports is beneficial. This might include talking to trusted friends, exploring creative outlets like painting or music, or even adopting a pet for companionship. Remember, healing is rarely linear. Be patient with yourself through moments of difficulty. Importantly, if suicidal thoughts arise again, reaching out for immediate professional support is crucial. You’re not alone, and taking those small steps to understand and nurture your mental health can gradually ease the anger/depression loop.

I definitely understand. Therapy can help as long as you have the right therapist and don't expect change overnight. Stick with it and don't be afraid to add medication to help. ❤️

bad advice saturday: stay busy.
stay busy. you won't have to feel it. you will. busyness doesn't dissolve the feeling. it postpones it. it keeps the grief, the anger, the confusion, the grief you haven't named yet — all of it — at a manageable distance. until the schedule clears. until the noise stops.
