I refuse to pay bands for someone else’s big day..

We’ve been best friends for over 10 years. So when she said she’s getting married? I was so happy for her. At first, it all sounded fine until wedding planning turned into guests footing the bill. She’s having a destination wedding, flights and hotels alone are thousands. But then she sent a Google Doc called “Wedding Guest Contributions” with crazy breakdowns: $300 for a mandatory rehearsal dinner, $250 for boat tours/wine tastings, $150 for matching pastel outfits (for her photos), even a $100 minimum wedding gift. I told her I can’t afford that on top of travel. She was like: everyone’s pitching in, it’s not a big deal. Love takes effort. It feels like she’s using the wedding to fund a fancy trip, not celebrate love. I said I might skip it, and she got cold. I love her, but I can’t go into debt for her aesthetic. Would I be the a-hole to say I’m not coming?

... Read moreAttending a destination wedding can be exciting but also financially challenging, especially when the bride or groom asks guests to contribute to various high-priced events. From mandatory rehearsal dinners costing hundreds of dollars to group activities like boat tours and wine tastings, guests often feel the pressure of unexpected expenses. Additionally, requests for matching outfits and steep minimum gifts can add to the financial burden. This situation often sparks a debate about fairness and friendship. While many understand that weddings can be costly, especially destination ones requiring travel and accommodation, some feel it's unreasonable to expect guests to fund what seems like a vacation disguised as a wedding celebration. Guests might worry about going into debt or sacrificing their budget for someone else’s big day. One solution to this dilemma is open, honest communication. If the financial demands feel overwhelming, it’s important to express concerns kindly and clearly. True friends might understand budget constraints and appreciate honesty rather than silent resentment or forced attendance. Additionally, some guests choose alternatives like sending thoughtful gifts or celebrating in other ways if attending isn’t feasible. After all, weddings celebrate love and relationships, which are not solely defined by presence or lavish spending. For couples planning destination weddings, transparency about costs and consideration for guests’ financial situations can foster goodwill. Avoiding mandatory expensive activities or offering alternatives can help balance celebration needs with guests’ capabilities. Ultimately, everyone should feel comfortable with their participation level, ensuring celebrations remain joyful rather than stressful financial burdens. Whether attending or respectfully declining, prioritizing sincere relationships over hefty price tags reflects the true spirit of special occasions.

That’s the stupidest thing I have ever heard. If people want to give a gift then just give rot. I would never go to a co wedding if i had to pay to get in. Nobody shows up I bet!

If you can't afford it,don't hint. Say no upfront . As a best friend, she should already know your situation and not pressure you. My sister had a destination wedding but she made it possible for us to be there.
