I remember when teachers drilled that line into our heads. Junior year, even basic math classes banned calculators with “you need to learn this by hand!” Then senior year, suddenly we had to have a basic calculator, and upper-level math required scientific ones.
Back then, smartphones weren’t cheap enough for every kid to have, dumb phones only did simple addition/subtraction. It’s basically impossible to not have a calculator on you unless you’re in a situation where math’s the last thing on your mind.
