Gold's next $1,000 move is still higher.
(Kitco News) -- The short-term momentum in the gold market is changing, and prices may consolidate in the last two months of 2025. One analyst, however, said he expects the next $1,000 move to be higher.
In an interview with Kitco News, Aakash Doshi, head of gold strategy at State Street Investment Management, said he expects gold prices to consolidate below the resistance of about $4,000 an ounce, noting that November and December were negative months for gold-backed exchange-traded funds.
"The target price for your gold really depends on your time frame," he said. "If we're talking 12 months from now. This rally isn't over yet, but I think we can see about eight weeks of consolidation. This is a good consolidation in the long-term bull market."
The comments come as SPDR Gold Shares, the world's largest gold-backed ETF (NYSE: GLD), saw its holdings fall nearly 8 tons after the price of gold peaked at about $4,360 an ounce.
Despite the recent outflow of global ETFs, the gold market is seeing unprecedented investor demand. However, Doshi noted that global ETF holdings remain below their peak from 2020. He added that he expects it's only a matter of time before the new record is set.
"Because November and December are not good months. We may not get there this year, but I expect to see new highs in the first quarter of 2026."
While State Street has yet to have an official 2026 gold price forecast. Doshi said $5,000 would be a reasonable goal.
"If I had to call $3,000 or $5,000 gold - with a middle trading price near $4,000 - I would lean more towards $5,000," he said.
Although the ETF's outflow may exacerbate the seasonal outlook as momentum resets from rallies in August and September. Driven by the Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) sentiment, Doshi said he expects any revisions to be relatively shallow, as there is still significant underlying support in the market.
Doshi noted that recent data from the World Gold Council shows a record physical demand for gold. Even though prices are trading at record levels, he explained that investors seem comfortable with rising prices. Because there is still a lot of value in the market.
"At this rally, gold was bought too much but not overwhelmed, so we still see a lot of potential," he said.
One key factor changing the gold market is still central bank demand. Official reserves are increasing by between 750 and 900 tons this year. While demand has fallen from about 1,000 tons of purchases over the past three years, it is still twice the amount of purchases in 2021 when the trend first started.
"This dollar devaluation trend has transformed the gold market. Gold has become an important alternative to global Fiat currency trading," Doshi said.
Meanwhile, Doshi said demand for investment remained strong, as the Federal Reserve was expected to continue to cut interest rates while inflationary pressures remained high.
Lower interest rates and rising inflation are expected to push real interest rates lower; reducing the opportunity cost of gold as a non-return asset.
"The bull surge we are seeing with the rising backend is seizing on expectations of higher inflation," he said. "This environment will continue to support gold."
