Over the last couple of years there’s been this online epidemic of hate comments, negativity, and constant arguing in comment sections. And the wild part is…the post doesn’t even have to be anything serious. It could be the happiest video, a silly recipe, or a super positive post, and people will still find a reason to be toxic. That’s just where we’re at with internet culture right now.
So why do people do this? Psychology actually has a lot of answers. One of the biggest ones is something called the online disinhibition effect. Basically, when people are behind a screen, they feel anonymous and protected. That “mask” makes them say things they would never have the guts to say in real life. It gives them a false sense of power and control.
Then there’s projection. A lot of hate comments come from people who are unhappy with themselves, so they push that negativity outward. Instead of dealing with their own insecurities or frustrations, they project it onto someone else. If they’re feeling powerless, attacking someone in a comment section gives them this tiny, temporary feeling of superiority.
