things I’m currently struggling with as a teacher

... Read moreWe all know teaching is more than just a job; it's a calling, a passion, and often, a never-ending list of to-dos. While the rewards are immense, the challenges can truly weigh on us. I've been navigating my own set of struggles lately, and I know I'm not alone. It's hard to truly let your mind rest from school when you're constantly thinking about lesson plans, student needs, and upcoming deadlines. It spills into your personal life, making it tough to balance social activities with genuine rest – sometimes I feel like I'm either 'rotting all weekend' from exhaustion or over-scheduling myself just to feel productive. Beyond these personal battles with mental load and self-care, there are so many other facets to the challenges of being a teacher. The internal pressure and expectations we put on ourselves are immense, often leading to burnout if we don't actively work to prioritize our physical health, including consistent workouts and nutritious food. But it's not just about personal well-being; the classroom itself presents unique hurdles. Managing a diverse group of learners, dealing with unexpected behavioral issues, and adapting to ever-changing curricula can be draining. One common challenge I've often thought about, and perhaps you have too, is how to balance structured discipline with fostering engaging philosophical dialogue. It feels like a paradox sometimes, doesn't it? On one hand, a well-managed classroom with clear expectations and consistent routines is essential for a productive learning environment. Without this structure, chaos can quickly ensue, making deep learning impossible. On the other hand, we want to encourage critical thinking, open discussion, and the exploration of complex ideas – true philosophical dialogue – which often requires a more flexible, open-ended approach. So, how do we find that sweet spot? I've found that it starts with establishing a strong foundation of discipline from day one. Clear, concise rules and routines aren't about stifling creativity; they're about creating a safe and predictable space where students feel secure enough to take intellectual risks. When students understand the boundaries and expectations, they are more likely to participate confidently in discussions without fear of disruption or judgment. Think of it as a strong container for brilliant ideas. Once that structure is in place, you can strategically weave in opportunities for dialogue. This isn't about letting students endlessly debate every single topic. Instead, it’s about designating specific times and formats for these deeper discussions. Maybe it's a 'Philosophical Friday' where you pose a thought-provoking question related to your curriculum, or a 'Socratic Seminar' where students engage in guided, open-ended inquiry. Provide sentence starters, teach active listening skills, and model respectful disagreement. It’s also crucial to teach them how to have a philosophical discussion – how to cite evidence, how to challenge ideas respectfully, and how to build on each other’s thoughts. By setting up these intentional spaces within your structured day, you empower students to think critically and engage deeply, all while maintaining the order necessary for effective learning. It's a continuous learning process for us all, but definitely worth the effort!
