Nick Drake | Pink Moon | 1972 - Album Review

I just spent the evening with “Pink Moon” by Nick Drake and I’m not entirely sure whether I’ve been comforted or gently dismantled. The whole album feels like he sat down with just a guitar, whispered a confession and left me to sweep up the emotional debris.

The title track, “Pink Moon”, opens like a ghostly postcard, short, spare, but it clings to you like the smell of rain on concrete. Then “Place to Be” comes in, and suddenly I’m questioning every bad decision I’ve ever made, because how can three minutes sound like an entire autobiography?

“Road” is deceptively upbeat, almost like a pep talk from someone who knows they won’t be around long enough to see you take it. And “Things Behind the Sun” that’s the one that floored me. It’s tender, it’s fragile, it’s the kind of song that makes you feel seen in the worst and best ways. By the time “From the Morning” closes the record, it’s not resolution I feel, but this strange, cautious hope, like maybe tomorrow won’t be so terrible after all.

Listening to “Pink Moon” isn’t background music. It’s sitting with grief, beauty and the weird ache of being alive, all in under half an hour. For me, it’s a reminder that simplicity can be devastatingly profound.
