Harry Nilsson | Nilsson Schmilsson | 1971 ๐Ÿ“… 54 Year Anniversary Vinyl Album Review ๐ŸŽง

Today marks the anniversary of โ€œNilsson Schmilssonโ€ (released 11 November 1971) by Harry Nilsson, and I find myself revisiting it with a mix of fondness and bemusement. Itโ€™s the record where Nilsson, with producer Richard Perry, somehow managed to distil his whimsical, mercurial talent into something both pop-accessible and bizarrely brilliant. The album peaked at No. 3 on the US Billboard 200 and reached No. 4 in the UK charts. Iโ€™m sitting here feeling that weird dual state: โ€œIs this โ€˜seriousโ€™ music or an arch joke?โ€ and of course, itโ€™s both.

On the track list youโ€™ve got the soaring heartbreak of โ€œWithout Youโ€, the number-one single which remains Nilssonโ€™s most iconic cover (originally by Badfinger). Then thereโ€™s the kookiness of โ€œCoconutโ€ (โ€œput the lime in the coconutโ€ฆโ€) and the surprising rock cadence of โ€œJump into the Fireโ€. And yet, tucked between the hits, youโ€™ll find dreamy gems like โ€œThe Moonbeam Songโ€ and โ€œIโ€™ll Never Leave Youโ€ that gently remind you Nilsson wasnโ€™t merely chasing chart success, he was exploring odd angles of pop, humour, vulnerability and orchestral whimsy. Listening again, I felt myself glide from big-studio polish to quiet melancholy and back.

What makes me especially appreciate this album today is how Nilsson didnโ€™t compromise his quirky identity even when he had a bona fide smash on his hands. He could belt out a dramatic cover, deliver a novelty earworm, and then retreat into introspective territory, and make it all feel part of a single coherent statement. In short: it sounds like someone utterly comfortable being odd, and unspeakably good at making oddness feel universal. I found myself smiling at how bold that is. So if youโ€™ve never spun this album on your headphones, maybe do so today. I guarantee the world still feels a little stranger, and a little kinder, when Nilssonโ€™s voice is filling the room.
