I’ve just spent a bit of time today revisiting “Coda” the John Bonham posthumous swan-song of Led Zeppelin, and it still feels like cracking open a dusty attic box full of both half-forgotten treasures and “what-were-they-thinking” curiosities. Released on 26 November 1982, Coda gathers a motley assortment of outtakes, B-sides and odds-and-ends recorded over the band’s career, packaged together after their breakup.

What hits me first, listening through, is how uneven it is, but in a strangely compelling way. There are moments of pure gold: “Hey Hey, What Can I Do” once a B-side, sounds like a secret acoustic gem that deserved better days. “Poor Tom” evokes the grit and swagger of their mid-70s blues-rock leanings. Then you get the quirks: live variants, rough-around-the-edges jams, bits that feel like the band clearing their desks. Together the tracks read like a behind-the-scenes documentary, rather than a polished final statement.

Chart-wise, Coda landed at No. 4 on the UK Albums Chart, which is no small feat for a post-breakup odds-and-ends anthology, It also reached No. 6 in the US. It isn’t the majestic “final chapter” some fans might have hoped for, but to me, that’s the point. It feels like the messy, human epilogue to a band that burned bright, stumbled, and left behind fragments of brilliance. On this 43rd anniversary, I find myself quietly grateful for it.
